A Little Perspective Goes a Long, Long Way

Well it is difficult to argue that there are not a lot of things to be “concerned” about these days.  Likewise if you are looking for reasons to be angry there is no shortage of “things” to fit the bill.  Finally, in truth I do not consider myself to necessarily be an optimist. But everyone once in awhile I do try to step back and try to assess things from a broader perspective.  I found that the article linked below does a pretty good job of that.

For the record, this article is not a “lecture” on how spoiled we all are – it is a fascinating recitation of how far we have come in a relatively short period of time.  At the very least it will provide you with some fascinating facts to impress your family and friends with this holiday weekend.  I strongly encourage you to give it a read.

  1. We have come a long way but this article makes a different point. It said that we are not heading in the wrong direction because we have come a long way. Logically, one does not follow from the other. Just because we are better off than we were in 1945 does not mean we are doing as well as we could be now. The comparison should be between how well we are doing and how well we could be doing, not between how well we are doing now and how well off we were in 1945 or some earlier year.

We are better off than we used to be because of the free enterprise system. The author should have made that point instead of bashing Trump and Bernie. This is an obvious endorsement of Hillary. If this is the logic used by Hillary voters and she is elected, heaven help us.

I would suggest sticking to your great investment writing and leave the political, illogical and pro Hillary articles like this one to other authors.

    1. Todd, you raise several interesting points. But while the article may be interpreted as a political endorsement that was not my intention. What struck me – for example – was the point about how people used to buy encyclopedias on the installmant plan and now we “carry a box” around in our pockets that gives us access to virtually all of human history. I just think every once in awhile we need to stop and say “Wow.” That was all I was going for. Take Care, Jay
